Falcons defeat Newberry 13-8 in road victory

NEWBERRY, S.C. – The University of Montevallo men's lacrosse team defeated host Newberry College 13-8 in a non-conference match on the road March 16.
 
Sophomore Thomas Vaesen scored a game-high five goals to lead the Falcons, who improved to 3-6 overall this season.
 
Freshman Jackson Neufeld added three goals in the win.
 
Sophomore Kordell Primus, along with freshmen Dante Cloutier, Connor Frederick, Chaiton Williams and Mason Jolley, scored one goal each.
 
Primus also finished with a team-high two assists and compiled a team-best eight ground balls.
 
Sophomore goalkeeper Kyle Little finished with 12 saves in the victory.

KEY GOALS

1st (14:28) | Sophomore Kordell Primus scored the first goal in the contest, unassisted, to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead.
 
1st (14:02) | Sophomore Thomas Vaesen added an unassisted goal less than 30 seconds later to give Montevallo a 2-0 advantage.
 
1st (12:49) | Jeremy Ross scored an unassisted goal to help Newberry trim the Falcons' lead to 2-1.
 
1st (10:03) | Justin Walsh scored a goal off an assist from Dylan Mansur to help the Wolves tie the game at 2-2.
 
1st (9:16) | Stone Boone scored a goal off an assist from Brady Kearnan to cap a 3-0 scoring run and give Newberry a 3-2 lead.
 
2nd (12:18) | Freshman Chaiton Williams scored an unassisted goal early in the second half to help the Falcons tie the game at 3-3.
 
2nd (1:31) | Freshman Jackson Neufeld scored an unassisted goal to put the Falcons back on top 4-3 before halftime.
 
3rd (13:36) | Neufeld scored a goal off an assist from Primus to extend the Falcons' lead to 5-3 early in the third quarter.
 
3rd (12:16) | Mansur scored a goal off an assist from Belton Bryan to help Newberry trim the Falcons' lead to 5-4.
 
3rd (5:47) | Freshman Mason Jolley capped a 3-0 scoring run by the Falcons with his unassisted goal midway through the third quarter to push the Montevallo lead to 8-4.
 
4th (14:18) | Vaesen scored an unassisted goal early in the fourth quarter to give the Falcons a 10-6 lead.
 
4th (2:41) | Vaesen scored an unassisted goal in the final minutes to give Montevallo a 13-7 advantage, its largest in the game.

GAME NOTES
  • Newberry outshot the Falcons 42-35 in the game, but Montevallo finished with a 25-20 edge in shots on goal.
  • Montevallo converted 1-of-2 extra-man opportunities, while the Wolves were 0-of-5 in man-up situations.
  • The Falcons finished with a 13-11 edge in face offs in the contest.
  • Montevallo finished 27-of-29 in clear attempts, its highest percentage of the season, while Newberry finished 20-of-24 in clear attempts.
