Falcons fall to nationally ranked Rockhurst 18-11 in conference opener

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo men's lacrosse team fell to visiting No.13 Rockhurst University 18-11 in the first Great Lakes Valley Conference game of the season. 

Sophomore Thomas Vaesen scored a team-high five goals and recorded one assist as he compiled a team-best six points. Vaesen also recorded a team-high five ground balls, as the Falcons dropped to 2-5 on the season and 0-1 in conference play.

Sophomore Kordell Primus contributed three goals and totaled four ground balls. Freshmen Jackson Neufeld, Dante Coultier, and sophomore Ryan Shea added one goal each.

Naufeld, Shea, and freshman Andru Ross each registered one assist.

Freshmen Dylan Witt and Colin Jeffrey each added a team-high  two caused turnovers, while Witt recored three ground balls, and Jeffery totaled four.

Sophomore Kyle Little finished with 14 saves and a .437 save percentage, in the loss.

KEY GOALS

1st (13:15) | Sophomore Thomas Vaesen scored the first goal of the game to give the Falcons the 1-0 lead.

1st (12:23) | Rockhurst's Collin Fischer tied the game 1-1 in a man-up situation. 

1st (10:38) | Freshman Dante Coultier gave Montevallo the lead 2-1, scoring unassisted.

1st (8:16) | Montevallo led 3-1 after Freshman Jackson Neufled found the back of the net, from an assist by sophomore Ryan Shea.

1st (0:08) | Kai Trujillio capped a four goal scoring run by the Hawks, to end the first quarter with the lead 5-3, scoring unassisted.

2nd (14:07) | Montevallo answered Rockhurst in the opening stages of the second quarter when Vaesen found the back of the net, unassisted, to trim the lead to 5-4.

2nd (9:59) | Vaesen tied the game 5-5 for the Falcons, scoring unassisted for his third goal of the game.

2nd (5:59) | Sophomore Kordell Primus scored his first goal of the game, assisted by Vaesen, to lead 6-5.

2nd (0:17) | Grant Vanoverbeke capped a two goal scoring run for the Hawks to carry a 7-6 lead in to halftime. 

3rd (10:28) | Vaesen scored his fifth goal of the game, on an assist from freshman Andru Ross, tying the game 8-8, after the teams exchanged goals to begin the third quarter.

4th (9:36) | Trujillio scored the Hawks' ninth straight goal to lead Montevallo 17-8.

4th (5:53) | Shea scored an unassisted goal, capping a two goal scoring run for the Falcons, trimming the lead to 17-10.

4th (0:27) | Primus scored his third goal of the game, in a man-up situation, for the Falcons' final goal of the game, as the Hawks led 18-11.

GAME NOTES

  • Rockhurst outscored the Falcons 11-5 in the second half.
  • The Hawks outshot Montevallo 52-33, including a 32-17 edge in shots on goal.
  • The Hawks finished with a 27-6 advantage in face offs won in the contest.
  • Montevallo turned the ball over 26 times compared to 25 turnovers by the Hawks.
  • Rockhurst recorded a successful clear in 19 of 23 attempts, while the Falcons were able to clear the ball in just 18 of 26 attempts.
  • Montevallo recorded 34 ground balls compared to 57 ground balls by the Hawks.
  • Montevallo finished 2-of-10 in man-up opportunities, while Rockhurst scored in just 1-of-5 in man-up situations.
