Falcons open GSC Tournament against UAH Friday

Montevallo, Ala.- The University of Montevallo baseball team will travel to Oxford, Alabama this weekend for the Gulf South Conference Tournament, held at Choccolocco Park. The Falcons enter the tournament as the No. 5 overall seed after a 2-1 series win over the University of Alabama-Huntsville this past weekend.

Montevallo finished the regular season with a 22-26 overall record, including a 17-13 mark in conference play.

"Any time you go and win 17 games in conference play, you've had a really good season," said Head Coach Chandler Rose. "I think in the last three weeks we've played our best baseball."

Montevallo finished the regular season winning six of its last eight games.

The Falcons will take on the Chargers of UAH in the first round of the double-elimination tournament on Friday, May 3 at 4:30 p.m. Montevallo finished second in the GSC last season and were picked to finish fourth in the GSC Baseball Preseason Poll announced in January.

Senior pitcher Chrit Rudkin will start on the mound against UAH Friday in the conference tournament opener.

"This will be the first time I've really had to face another team a week after I already faced them, so our game plan has to be different" said Rudkin. "Last week I threw way more off-speed so this week we are probably going to throw more fastballs, but we have to see what their game plan is, because it's going to be different."

Against UAH this season

Montevallo enters the GSC tournament to face UAH in round one, fresh off a three-game series against the Chargers. Montevallo and UAH wraped up a three-game series Sunday with Montevallo winning two games in the series.

"It's unusual to play a team three times and turn around and play them in game one, so there won't be any secrets between the two teams," said Rose.

The Falcons took game one 8-1 and won in walk-off fashion in game two 5-4. The Chargers topped Montevallo 14-11 in game three.

"It's tournament time, anything can happen in the tournament. Everyone's fired up and ready to go." Rose added.

On the Mound:

Senior Chrit Rudkin started on the mound in game one on Saturday, pitching 8 and 1/3 innings. Rudkin pitched eight scoreless innings before allowing one run in the ninth. The Novato, California native didn't allow a hit until the sixth inning and finished with eight strikeouts, five hits, one earned one and no walks.

Junior Chandler Ingram relieved Rudkin in game one and recorded the final two outs with one strikeout.

In game two, senior Justin Whitley started on the mound for the Falcons pitching only three innings. Montevallo threw four different arms in game two including junior Brady Schnarr who pitched two and 2/3 innings. Schnarr faced 12 batters and allowed only two hits while striking out one batter.
