MONTEVALLO, Ala. — Montevallo head basketball coach
Danny Young summed up
Wade Lowman's performance in the Falcons' 59-57 win over West Florida with one simple sentence.
"He was great," said Young, the 17-year head coach. "He was great tonight. He brought great energy and played really hard.
Lowman, who entered Monday night's contest having scored single digits for the first time all season in Montevallo's last game, returned to form against West Florida as the senior forward scored a game-high 18 points on 6-of-8 shooting, including six free throws, while bringing down a game-high 11 rebounds, blocking four shots, credited with four steals and dished one assist in 34 minutes of game action. It's the fourth double-double on the season for Lowman. His four steals set a career high, while the four blocks and 11 rebounds tied his career high. He was five points shy of his career high.
"With Jonas (Parker) being sick and Ivan (Smith) out, we've survived," Young said. "Credit to our team, because we've played really hard and they've tried to do everything I've asked and have done a pretty good job doing it."
Montevallo (10-4, 6-0) jumped out to a 31-13 lead with 7:11 remaining in the first half, before West Florida (5-8, 2-4) clawed back to make it 39-30 at intermission. From there, the Argonauts went on to outscore the Falcons by seven during the second half to make things interesting down the stretch.
West Florida took its first lead of the game with 2:15 remaining in the second half when Jon Brown sank two free throw attempts. However, the lead was short lived as
Xavier Malcom sank a 3-point basket less than 30 seconds later. The Falcon lead was extended to three 40 seconds later when
Jonas Parker converted a layup.
Both teams remained scoreless until Brown sank the backend of two free throws to cut the UWF deficit to two with 28 seconds left.
Cedric Jackson missed the frontend of a one-and-one with 20 seconds left, before the Argonauts bled the clock down to six seconds before calling a timeout.
West Florida has one final opportunity to tie or win the game, but a Cameron Cox 3-point shot was highly contested and fell into the hands of Lowman to seal the win.
"The resiliency we've been able to show this season is incredible," Young said. "The way we've been able to build a big lead, then fed off opponents at the end to win is great."
Brown, who entered Monday's game as the GSC's leading scorer with a 21.9 scoring average, was held to only 15 points on 4-of-14 shooting, including 1 of 6 from behind 3-point arc, with six of his points coming from the free throw line. Brown was held to five points up until the 5:29 mark of the second half.
Montevallo will have a five-day break before it returns to the court on Saturday, Jan. 11 when the Falcons fly to Memphis, Tenn., to face Christian Brothers University at 3 p.m.
