MONTEVALLO, Ala. - The University of Montevallo women's basketball team took a tough loss Wednesday night in Trustmark Arena, with a final score of 62-61 against Valdosta.
The Falcons started the game going back and forth with Valdosta until the Blazers began to extend their lead to 12-5 midway through the quarter. The Falcons answered with a run of their own as they were able to hold Valdosta to only three points for the remainder of the period making the score 15-12.Â
Montevallo battled with the Blazers in the second quarter until Valdosta forged a seven point lead with 2:31 left in the period. The Falcons cut the lead after the efforts of
Kiya Sain, who scored six consecutive points, gave way to a four point swing. The Falcons were down 28-25 headed into the half.
UM came out cold in the second half as they were unable to put in a shot for the first 2:29 of the period. Missed shots and turnovers continued to hurt Montevallo throughout the quarter making way for 41-27 Valdosta lead with 4:16 left on the clock. The
Falcons managed to cut the lead to eight after an
Alyssa Williams and-one, to make the score 42-34. Valdosta went on to finish the quarter with a 47-36 lead.
Montevallo continued to fight in the fourth despite the eleven point deficit. The Falcons established an 11-3 run to cut the lead to three points with 3:22 left in the game. The Blazers responded by pushing their lead 58-50 with fifty eight seconds remaining in the game. The Falcons cut the lead to three behind the efforts of Marissa Snodgrass. Snodgrass banked a two pointer and two clutch threes bringing Valdosta's lead to 60-58. The following possession
Jordan Jones came up with a major steal leading to an assist on the fast break from Jones to
Jennifer Andrew which tied the game 60-60. The Blazers created a two point lead after a critical UM turnover, which allowed VSU's Kayla Frey to sink two free throws with 10.2 seconds left. Montevallo had a chance to tie when
Jennifer Andrew went to the line but ultimately came up short on one out of two attempts. The Falcons ended the game losing by one point after a turnover took away UM's final chances to pull off a victory.
The Montevallo women's basketball team will be back in action Saturday December 19
th to take on Shorter University in Rome, Georgia starting at 1:00 PM.
