Falcons drop hard fought battle against UWG

MONTEVALLO, Ala. - The Montevallo womens team basketball came up short in their season opener versus West Georgia, Wednesday night with a final score of 77-72.

The Falcons started the game in dominant fashion, scoring 18 points in the first quarter before UWG was able to put in a basket, ending the quarter with a 24-13 lead.  The Wolves answered in the second quarter with several runs including a 13-7 run in the final four minutes of the second quarter setting a 37-37 tie going into the halftime break.

UWG's scoring never wavered in the third quarter, as they took the lead with the first bucket of the half.  The Wolves would not lose that lead for the rest of the quarter, outscoring the Falcons 59-46 by the end of the period.  Montevallo was able to pick up some steam in the fourth quarter when a three from Marissa Snodgrass cut the lead to three with 0:35 left to go in the game.  The Falcon's would finish the game 77-72 after a pair of clutch free throws from UWG's Zaria Bankston.

Despite the loss UM saw major contributions from Jordan Jones who dropped 17 points and snagged three rebounds, and from Savannah Lee who notched 12 points along with three rebounds.  Marissa Snodgrass added nine points to the Falcon effort along with senior Kiya Sain who scored eight points, and Tiara McLeod who had seven points and nine boards.

The Falcons will be back in Trustmark Arena next week for a match up against the Valdosta State Blazers on Wednesday, December 16 with tip off slated for 6:00 PM.
