MILLEDGEVILLE, Ga. — One pitch was the difference in the University of Montevallo's 2-1 loss to Young Harris College Saturday evening.
Heading into the top of the sixth inning having not allowed a hit yet, Montevallo's
Mychael McMillan retired Maddie Urquiola to make it 5.1 no-hit innings pitched. But then, Emily Harris reached via a throwing error, which gave the Mountain Lions a baserunner for when Morgan Curley hit a two-run home run during the next at bat to push Young Harris ahead.
Montevallo (0-1) attempted rallies in both the bottom of the sixth and seventh innings, though, as
Brianna Stella hit a one-out single in the sixth, then advanced to second when
Haley Barnette was hit by a pitch.
However,
Sierra Easterwood flew out to left field to end the threat.
The following inning,
Caroline Pope recorded a one-out infield single to represent the game-tying run. She advanced to second when
Holly LaForce drew a two-out walk, but both were stranded on base via a game-ending unassisted catcher putout.
Despite allowing the two-run home run, McMillan was nearly unhittable all evening as she went 7.0 innings, allowed only one hit, two runs — one unearned — one walk and struck out 11 batters. At the plate, Pope and Stella's hits were accompanied by
Mariel Bertossi's run-scoring hit in the bottom of the third when the Falcons went ahead 1-0 as LaForce scored.
Montevallo will wrap up the Georgia College Tournament on Sunday, Feb. 2 when the Falcons play Georgia College at 2:00 and 4:00 p.m. central time.
