MONTEVALLO, Ala. — It what was a close first half, Montevallo took control during the second half against Valdosta State to sail to a 90-67 victory over the Blazers Saturday afternoon.
Saturday's win marks the first time Montevallo has beaten Valdosta State in Montevallo since Jan. 23, 2006, when the Falcons won 47-42. The Falcons' win also snapped an 11-game losing streak to the Blazers that dated back to 2006.
Montevallo (16-4, 10-2) held a three-point lead, 21-18, after the first quarter, that was extended to 47-39 by halftime. The lead was built in large part to the productivity of
Shyan Flack, who had 12 first-half points on 6-of-13 shooting. The offensive outburst for the Somerville, Ala., native continued over into the second half as she added 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting to help the Falcons outscore Valdosta State 43-28 throughout the second half.
The game ballooned to start the fourth quarter as Montevallo took a 66-53 lead and turned it into a 77-57 advantage courtesy of an 11-4 scoring run, before the Falcons opted to pull their starters midway through the quarter.
By the time her 33 minutes of game action concluded,
Kiya Sain had scored 17 points, pulled down five rebounds and credited with four steals.
Aaliyah Rice joined Flack and Sain in double digits as the senior finished the game with 13 points and four rebounds.
While Flack and Rice were doing work in the paint,
Marisa Snodgrass was carrying the load on the wing as the freshman scored eight points, collected seven rebounds, dished out six assists and credited with two steals in a game-high 35 minutes of game time.
Savannah Lee added nine points off the bench.
Montevallo will return to action on Thursday, Feb. 6 when the Falcons travel to Cleveland, Tenn., to face the Lee University Flames. Lee earned a 71-67 win in Montevallo earlier this season on Jan. 16.
