Bats fall silent for Montevallo in loss to UWF

MONTEVALLO, Ala. — The University of Montevallo offense fell silent as No. 19 University of West Florida began the weekend's three-game series with a 10-0 victory over the Falcons in seven innings.

With senior left-hander Eric Keating on the mound for West Florida, Montevallo (5-2, 0-1) put together only two hits all afternoon as Khalid Collymore reached on an infield single in the bottom of the first, then Asa Awbrey recorded a two-out single in the bottom of the fourth.

The Falcons had a scoring opportunity in the bottom of the second, though, when Awbrey drew a one-out walk, then stole second and third, but a strikeout and groundball left him on base and ended the inning.

Montevallo's only other baserunners came when Collymore drew a two-out walk in the bottom of the third and Ben Teel drew a two-out walk in the bottom of the sixth as Keating struck out 13 Falcons on the day.

West Florida (3-4, 1-0) jumped on the scoreboard, 2-0, in the top of the third with two unearned runs courtesy of two Montevallo errors throughout the inning. The lead was extended by one with another unearned run in the top of the fifth on a two-out single back up the middle.

However, it was the top of the sixth when the Argonauts' lead ballooned as UWF scored six runs on six hits and one Montevallo error while leaving one runner on bases to take a 9-0 lead into the bottom of the inning. West Florida made it 10-0 the following inning with a one-out double to drive in a runner from second, who advanced bases as a result of a Falcon throwing error.

The two teams will return to the diamond on Saturday, Feb. 15 with a doubleheader to wrap up the two-day, three-game series. The first game on the twin bill is slated to begin at 12 p.m. CT.
