Falcons split GSC doubleheader with Wolves

CARROLLTON, Ga - The Falcons split the GSC Saturday doubleheader with the West Georgia Wolves, winning game one 3-2 and dropping game two 9-3.

In game one, freshman Tucker Marrillia delivered a big two-out, two-run homerun in the sixth inning to give the Falcons the lead for good, 3-2. Marillia drove in fellow freshman Asa Awbrey with his blast to centerfield after
Awbrey, a Carrollton, Georgia native, delivered a one-out triple into the gap in right center.

Freshman starting pitcher Grayson Bray scattered eight hits over his five innings of work to earn his first collegiate win. Bray (1-1) worked his first two innings in-order, before surrendering single runs in the third and fifth inning.

Daniel Buice relieved Bray in the sixth, after the Marillia homerun in the top of the frame. Buice, Joel Cheatwood and Chandler Ingram combined to work a scoreless sixth inning. Ingram finished the game for the Falcons and earned his third save of the young season.  Ingram logged 3.1 innings of shutout relief against the Wolves and has now accounted for a win or a save in six of the eight Falcons' victories this spring.

Riley Cain and Ty Wooton each had a two hits, with a double, in the contest. Wooten's RBI single in the fifth inning tied the game 1-1.

Sophomore Ben Teel and freshman Jake Smallwood each had a hit for the Falcons.

In game two, the Falcons fell behind early and never recovered. The Wolves chased starting pitcher JD Kytle in the first inning and plated 3 runs in the inning.

Montevallo (8-4, 2-3) answered back in the top of the second inning but could only score one after loading the bases with no outs. Awbrey and Davis Lott singled to start the inning, Marillia was hit by a pitch to load the bases. But the Falcons then hit into three straight fielder's choices and only plated the one run. Reed Latimer got the RBI in the inning.

West Georgia (8-4, 3-2) later scored one run in the bottom of the third and five in the fifth inning to extend their lead. Zach Toth and Griffin Lape worked in relief for the Falcons.

Teel's RBI single in the sixth inning and Cain's solo homerun in the seventh accounted for the second and third Falcons' runs.

Cain and Awbrey each had two hits in the nightcap.

NEXT UP: The first pitch of the rubber match between Montevallo and West Georgia is slated for Sunday, 12pm central.
