CARROLLTON, Ga - The Falcons dropped the rubber match to the West Georgia Wolves, 11-1 in seven innings Sunday afternoon.
The Wolves scored first with a solo homerun by Jermond Williams in the bottom of the second. Williams gave the Falcons trouble all weekend, collecting seven hits and six RBI in the three-game series.
Junior right fielder
Riley Cain led off the fourth inning with his second homerun of the weekend, tying the game at 1-1. Cain now leads the Falcons with three homeruns on the season.
Senior starting pitcher
Gus Cunningham worked himself into and out of trouble successfully all afternoon and carried the 1-1 tie into the fifth inning. The bottom of the fifth proved to be the turning point in the ballgame though, as the Wolves scored three runs off Cunningham (0-1) and reliever
Joel Cheatwood,via four singles and two walks.
West Georgia (9-4) added a run in the sixth and six more in the seventh to induce the shortened game.
Freshman
Asa Awbrey had a nice homecoming to Carrollton, collecting four hits, a triple, a stolen base and a run scored on the weekend.
With Awbrey, senior
Sebastian Samuels had one hit on the day.
NEXT UP: "RIVALRY WEEK" Montevallo hits the road on Wednesday for a midweek showdown with their old Peach Belt Conference rival, Columbus State Cougars (10-3, 5-1 PBC). First pitch in Columbus is 3:00pm central. The Falcons return home this weekend for GSC in-state rival Auburn University at Montgomery (4-9, 3-3 GSC). Game one of the three-game GSC series is set for Friday, 3:00pm central.
