MONTEVALLO, Ala. — The University of Montevallo brought the bats out of the cave Tuesday afternoon as the Falcons hammered out 21 total hits en route to a two-game sweep of Clark Atlanta, 7-0 and 12-2.
"You know, we struggled a little bit to get going — obviously a different pace of game for us — so we had to find the right groove before we were able to get going," said Montevallo softball head coach
Lindsay Vanover. "It took a little bit longer than we would've liked, but there were some great things today. We overcame a deficit when we were behind and were able to produce every inning after that."
Montevallo (3-1) started the first game Tuesday when
Mychael McMillan (1-1) in the circle and she picked up right where she left off over the weekend as the right-hander threw four innings of one-hit softball and struck out 10 of the 14 batters she faced, before giving way to
Kaitlyn Flugga, who earned the save by throwing three scoreless innings and retired all nine batters she faced.
"It's great to have Mychael," Vanover said. "Because every time she goes out there, she's striking everyone out, so nobody has to play behind her. But we'll have to get into a habit of not just waiting around for balls to be put in play, but expect balls against other opponents to be hit, so we need to be ready early and often."
Early and often how one might describe Montevallo's offense as the Falcons plated runs in the second, third and fourth innings to back the pitching duo of McMillan and Flugga.
Brianna Stella did most of the damage with two run-scoring triples, while
Sierra Easterwood clubbed a solo home run during the game, too.
The second game saw Montevallo fight from behind — for just a moment — as Clark Atlanta (0-2) took a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the third. However, a three-run bottom — courtesy of two errors — pushed the Falcons back ahead. From there, Easterwood extended the lead with a two-run home run in the fourth, before
Haley Barnette hit a solo shot in the fifth and
Gabrielle Ginnis clubbed a game-ending three-run home run over the left-field fence.
"I was most impressed with how we had three pinch-hitters come in and get hits and we had someone hit a home run off the bench," Vanover said. "We swung the bat pretty well today and that was from top to bottom."
Montevallo will look to carry its offensive momentum in its next game when the Falcons travel to Chattanooga, Tenn., to participate in the Lee University Tournament on Saturday, Feb. 8 and Sunday, Feb. 9. UM will open play against the University of Indianapolis on Saturday at 10:00 a.m.
