Softball splits with nationally-ranked Indianapolis

MONTEVALLO, Ala. — The University of Montevallo were on both sides of one-run games Saturday afternoon as the Falcons fell to the University of Indianapolis, 2-1, in the first game of a doubleheader before taking the second game 10-9.

"Man, it feels great to play and beat teams that are near the top in the country," said Montevallo softball head coach Lindsay Vanover, whose team notched its first win over a top-25 team this season after dropping to fifth-ranked Young Harris College, 2-1, to open the season.

In the first game on Saturday, UIndy benefited from a bases-loaded walk in the top of the first inning, before UM starter Mychael McMillan (1-2) responded by striking out the next three batters to end the inning. The Greyhounds extended their lead against McMillan to 2-0 two innings later on a one-out double.

It took until the bottom of the fifth for Montevallo (4-2) to record its first hit of the game as Alexis Cortez led off the inning with a single to left. The Falcons, similar to UIndy, scored on a bases-loaded walk five batters later. However, the Greyhounds retired the next five UM batters until the Falcons drew a two-out walk in the bottom of the seventh, but a grounder back to pitcher ended the game.

Game two was more of a scoring fest as Montevallo opened with a five-run bottom of the first as the Falcons sent 10 batters to plate and scattered five hits to produce five runs.

UIndy responded with three runs in the second two runs in the third to tie the game. However, Montevallo re-took the lead in the bottom half of the third on a throwing error by the Greyhounds. But the lead stood for only one inning as UIndy plated three in the top of the fifth to take an 8-6 lead into the sixth.

Like the first inning, Montevallo sent 10 batters to the plate in the bottom of the sixth and produced four runs on three hits while also leaving the bases loaded.

"In the bottom of the sixth, we just had a lot of girls buy in," Vanover said. "We just wanted to put the pressure on their pitching staff."

UIndy (1-1) tried to tie the game, again, in the top of the seventh, but it only mustered one run on one hit and left runners at second and third to end the game.

The two teams will wrap up its three-game, two-day series on Sunday, Feb. 9 at 11 a.m. CT.
