Offense misfires as Montevallo falls to Trevecca Nazarene

MONTEVALLO, Ala. — Coming off a weekend with 42 runs scored, the University of Montevallo only mustered a handful against Trevecca Nazarene as the Falcons fell, 14-3, to the Trojans Friday afternoon.

"We didn't do anything good," said Montevallo baseball head coach Chandler Rose. "We just got beat in every area of the game: on the mound, offensively, defensively. We didn't do anything good all day and (Trevecca Nazarene) took advantage of that."

Trevecca Nazarene (1-0) galloped out to an early 2-0 lead after two run-scoring hits in the top of the first against starter Grayson Bray. It took until the bottom of the third for Montevallo to respond as Ben Teel, the reigning Gulf South Conference Player of the Week, doubled home Riley Cain, who walked to lead off the inning then stole second base.

Montevallo (3-1) managed to tie the game at 2-2 the following inning when the Falcons played small ball to their advantage as Davis Lott and Ryan Brooks opened the inning with a pair of walks. From there, Jake Smallwood dropped a sacrifice bunt to advance both runners. Reed Latimer followed with a game-tying ground out to second base.

However, the Trojans responded in a big way as Trevecca Nazarene scored seven runs on four hits and two error to take a 9-2 lead in the top of the sixth.

Cain struck into the Falcon deficit in the bottom of the seventh with a one-out solo home run, but Montevallo's offense, which finished the game with six hits, only mustered one more following Cain's homer.

"I mean, it's just one game," Rose said. "That's the first time we've really faced adversity like that, so we'll see what we are made of tomorrow. We have two games at home, and I think they'll be a lot of fight in our guys.

"We still have to clean some things up and get better in certain areas, but you can't take anything away from them because they're a good team."

Montevallo and Trevecca Nazerene will conclude its three-game, two-day series with a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 8, starting at 12 p.m. CT.
