MONTEVALLO, Ala. — The University of Montevallo used an eight-run inning and a game-ending sacrifice fly to take Saturday's doubleheader against Trevecca Nazarene University, 15-8 and 7-6, to move to 5-1 on the young season.
In the first game, both teams combined to score eight runs over the first two innings before the offenses cooled off a moment. With the score tied 4-4 heading into the bottom of the fifth, Montevallo took the lead with a two-run double by
Asa Awbrey, who came around to score on a single by
Reed Latimer just two batters later.
Montevallo didn't stop there as the Falcons plated eight runs on seven hits and four TNU errors to take a commanding 15-4 lead, before the Trojans responded with four runs of their own in the top half of the eighth.
It took a little longer to decide a winner in the second game despite Montevallo building a 6-1 lead after four full innings. Trevecca started to chip away in the top of the sixth by scoring a single run, then turned around and score two in both the eighth and ninth innings, respectively, to send the game into extra innings, despite Montevallo having the bases loaded with two outs in the bottom of the ninth.
Awbrey struck again when he singled with one out in the bottom of the 10th, then advancing to second when
Jake Smallwood drew a walk. Like the inning before, Montevallo loaded the bases after
Ryan Brooks was hit by a pitch. Latimer ended the game when he flew out to right field and Awbrey beat the throw to the plate.
Next time out, Montevallo, for the first time all season, will hit the road for a road contest when the Falcons travel to Mobile, Ala., to play Spring Hill College for a single-game, non-conference contest on Wednesday, Feb. 12 at 3 p.m. CT.
