Indianapolis takes Sunday contest to win series against Montevallo

MONTEVALLO, Ala. — The Sunday matineé to conclude the three-game series between the University of Montevallo and 12th-ranked University of Indianapolis did not go in favor of the Falcons as UM fell, 8-1, to the Greyhounds.

It was, however, an effective top of the first as Mychael McMillan (1-3) retired UIndy in order, but UIndy (2-1) got the scoring started in the top of the second when Taylor Danielson clubbed a one-out, two-run home run that plated Emily O'Conner, who collected the Greyhounds' first hit of the game with a one-out single prior to Danielson's plate appearance.

The following inning, UIndy plated four runs on five hits and one error to extend its lead to 6-0. The big blows during the inning were back-to-back, one-out, run-scoring doubles that combined to score three Greyhounds.

Haylie Foster made it 8-0, UIndy, with a one-out, two-run home run in the top of the fifth inning. That's when Montevallo (4-3) shaved off the game-ending, eight-run rule when Holly LaForce scored from third on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Sierra Easterwood. The Falcons, however, were not able to get another baserunner over the course of the sixth and seven innings.

Montevallo had an opportunity to score in the bottom of the first after Brianna Stella drew the first of her two walks, then moved all the way around to third before Carlee Mullinax draw a two-out walk. However, Mariel Bertossi popped out to end the inning. Caroline Pope started the second with a walk, then advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt but back-to-back outs left her on base.

Again, the Falcons got a baserunner to start an inning as Stella walked to begin the third, but she was erased on a one-out fielder's choice before a groundout ended the inning. In the fourth, it was Bertossi's turn to draw a leadoff walk, before Pope singled to centerfield. However, a double play and ground ball back to the pitcher ended the threat.

Montevallo will return to action on Wednesday, Feb. 12 when the Falcons host Spring Hill College for a two-game series, starting at 3:00 p.m. CT.
