Box Score 2 MOBILE, Ala. — The University of Montevallo looked — on several occasions — to be in prime position to sweep Wednesday's doubleheader at Spring Hill College, but a bottom-of-the-seventh rally by the Badgers in game two prevented that as the Falcons took game one, 11-7, and SHC took the second, 5-4.
In the opening game of the afternoon, Montevallo (5-4) got out to a 4-0 lead after the top of the first inning, which was highlighted by a three-run triple from
Sierra Easterwood. The Falcons extended their lead to 6-2 the next inning when
Haley Barnette clubbed a two-run home run to left-center field.
However, Spring Hill used a three-run bottom of the second, then back-to-back one-run innings in the fourth and fifth, respectively, to take a 7-6 lead into the top of the seventh.
But, Easterwood struck again when she doubled home Barnette to tie the game. Montevallo's offense didn't stop there as
Fallon Groves plated Easterwood to give the Falcons an 8-7 lead off a ground out to the pitcher. UM managed to score three more runs before the end of the inning to go from one run down to four runs up during the seventh inning.
Barnette opened the scoring for Montevallo in the second game with a run-scoring hit in the top of the first inning when she plated
Brianna Stella on a double.
Spring Hill responded with three runs on five hits and left two runners on base in its half of the first inning.
Small ball played to Montevallo's advantage in the top of the third when Barnette and Easterwood both recorded back-to-back one-out hits, before
Holly LaForce dropped a sacrifice bunt to score Barnette from third and cut UM's deficit to one. The deficit stood until the following inning when
Mariel Bertossi blasted a two-run home run to centerfield. The Falcons looked to continue the scoring opportunity when Barnette hit a two-out double, but she was stranded there on a flyout.
Montevallo's one-run lead stood until the bottom of the seventh when Spring Hill recorded a leadoff single to start the inning, before a sacrifice bunt moved the runner to second. Another single moved the game-tying run to third, while the game-winning run advanced to second via a stolen base during the following at bat, which ended in a sacrifice fly to right to tie the game before a throwing error brought the game-ending run home from third.
Montevallo will return to action on Friday, Feb. 14 when the Falcons play host to the fourth-ranked University of West Florida Argonauts.
