Union wins final game, Falcons take series 2-1

MONTEVALLO, Ala - The Montevallo Falcons (11-9 overall, 5-7 GSC) split their doubleheader with the Union Bulldogs (8-12 overall, 3-6 GSC) on Saturday winning the first game in 10 innings 4-3 and losing the nightcap 5-0.  Most important, the Falcons won their first GSC series of the season two games to one and improved their conference record.

In the first game of the doubleheader, Union scored first in the top of the first to make it a 1-0 game. The Falcons answered in the bottom of the 2nd when senior Davis Lott reached on an error and freshman Mitch Fleming singled.  Senior Ryan Brooks moved the runners to second and third base setting up freshman Evan Liddie who singled driving in both runners.

The game was a pitching duel between Union starter Walker Adkisson and Falcon starter redshirt freshman Zach Toth.  Toth threw no-hit ball for five innings before giving up two hits in the sixth when Union parlayed the hits into two runs and a 3-2 lead over the Falcons.

Montevallo tied the game in the eighth when senior pinch hitter Sebastian Samuels singled and freshman Reed Latimer pinch ran for Samuels.  Freshman Jake Smallwood walked and then a wild pitch moved Latimer to third.  Pinch hitter Tucker Marrillia singed driving in Latimer and tying the game at 3-3.

It stayed that way until the bottom of the tenth when senior Jake Morris made things happen with a bunt single and excellent base running.  Morris stole second and on the steal, a wild pitch allowed Morris to move to third base.    After a walk to freshman Asa Awbry, sophomore Ben Teel looked at ball four as it went to the backstop for another wild pitch and Morris ran home with the winning run.

The Falcon bullpen stepped up and slammed the door on the Bulldogs allowing four hits over 4 2/3 innings.  Senior Joel Cheatwood, sophomore Griffin Lape and junior Ryan Duncan pitched 2 2/3 innings giving way to senior Chandler Ingram who had another outstanding outing and got the win for the Falcons.

The second game of the doubleheader saw Union senior pitcher Brandon Maxwell shut out the Falcons in seven innings.   Maxwell allowed 3 hits and struck out 8 with 2 base on balls.  The Falcons could not get any offense going.

NEXT UP: The Falcons travel to Birmingham on Wednesday to take on Miles College.  Game time is 12 noon as the Falcons try to win their 12th game of the season.
