Offense, McMillan Carry Falcons to Saturday DH Sweep of Union

Montevallo, Ala. - Montevallo swept a GSC doubleheader from Union University on Saturday evening, 10-4, 6-5.

The Falcons got great offensive production in both games and Mychael McMillan turned in three outstanding pitching performances. Yes, "three" is not a typo.

McMillan induced all 21 Bulldog outs in the Falcons 10-4 win but was not credited for a complete game, a feat not often achieved. The Bibb County High School product threw four innings as a starting pitcher, reentered to the circle in the fifth to relieve Kaitlyn Flugga, and threw the remaining three innings to finish the game. In all, the junior worked 7.0 innings, gave up four hits and struck out nine.

McMillan also preserved the game two victory and win for starter Mabry Norris (3-1) with a 1.2 inning save. She struck out four Bulldogs in relief.

"Mychael was outstanding for us all day," said head coach Lindsay Vanover. "We needed her to deliver, and she delvered."

Norris delivered as well, in her fifth start of the season, as she yielded six hits and two earned runs in 5.1 innings. Norris struck out two for her third win of the year.

Montevallo scored early and often in game one, jumping on the Bulldogs in the first and third inning. A first inning RBI double by Mariel Bertossi, a three-run homerun by Sierra Easterwood and RBI double by Holly LaForce in the third, gave the Falcons a 5-0 lead after three innings.

After a Bulldog run in the top of the fourth, the Falcons answered right back with four more in the frame, on a Fallon Groves sacrifice fly, a Bertossi squeeze bunt, an Easterwood RBI single and a Barnette RBI double.

Montevallo added their tenth run of the game in the fifth with a bases loaded walk to Bertossi, her third RBI of the day.

Easterwood was 2-for-4 with four RBI and two runs scored.

Brianna Stella added a hit and three walks as the Falcons leadoff.

Brooke Ingram and Alex Corez also had one hit.

In game two, Montevallo got out to an early lead again and lead 6-0 after four innings.

Montevallo High School product Georgia Hughes started the scoring with a two-run double to left center in the second inning, scoring Barnette and Cortez.

Stella added an RBI single in the second inning, LaForce knocked home one with an RBI double in the third inning.

In the fourth, Cortez singled home a run and Bertossi crushed one to straightaway center for a solo homerun.

Union (15-10, 4-5) chipped away at the Montevallo (13-8, 8-4) lead in the fifth, sixth and seventh but five runs was not enough.

Hughes was 3-for-3 on the day, with two RBI and a run scored.

Cortez 2-for-3 with an RBI and run scored.

Montevallo will try for the GSC sweep on Sunday morning at 11:00am.
