Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Falcons top UWG in game 2 of weekend series

CARROLLTON, Ga. - The Montevallo women's basketball team concluded the two-game series at West Georgia with a 91-74 win over the Wolves.  The Falcons were only a few points away from topping the season high 92 total points scored in the win against UWF (1/8/21).

"One of the things that stood out about our team today was their toughness, I thought our girls did a great job of answering every time West Georgia made a run", said head coach Gary Van Atta

"Sometimes it looks like racetrack basketball with all the back and forth scoring but we were able to string something together and hit some big shots."

The game was highly competitive from the moment the ball tipped off as the Falcons traded baskets with the Wolves for the first 4:43 of the game making a 10-10 tie.  That was until two made free throws by Jordan Jones made way for a 5-0 run.  West Georgia kept it tight throughout the quarter, however Montevallo prevailed, ending the period with a six-point lead.

In the second quarter Montevallo kept the consistency, extending its lead to +9 within the first three minutes.  UM would hold on to the lead but the Wolves stayed close, cutting the lead to five headed into halftime.

West Georgia opened the second half with grit, cutting the UM lead down to two points midway through the third.  The Falcons answered with a 10-2 run expanding their lead to +8.  Montevallo kept the foot on the gas as a Jennifer Andrews lay up made way for the largest lead (+13) of the game at that point.  The quarter would conclude with a 70-59 score in favor of Montevallo.

UM finished the game strong leaving no doubt to the incoming victory after starting the fourth with an 11-4 run over West Georgia.  The Falcon's stayed consistent in the quarter ending the game with a 91-74 victory.

"I was really proud of the way we flipped it in the second half.  After only having 13 points in the paint in the first half we scored 29 points in the paint in the second half.  I thought that was the difference in the game."

Jordan Jones led the Falcon's offense in scoring, notching 23 points on 8-15 shots.  Jones tied for the second most rebounds bringing down nine boards, along with three steals, and two assists.

Junior forward Savannah Lee turned in another solid performance in Carrolton, scoring 22 points with two steals, and one assist.  In her first career double-double Lee also led the team in rebounds with 11.

Additionally, Kiya Sain (12 points, 2 rebounds, block), Marissa Snodgrass (11 points, 9 assists, 2 rebounds), and Jennifer Andrew (10 points, 3 rebounds) contributed double digit scoring efforts to UM's point column.

NEXT UP: Montevallo will host West Alabama in Trustmark Arena on Saturday, January 23 with tip off slated for 2:00 PM.
