Falcons survive UWG second half surge to win 79-69 in home opener

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The Montevallo women's basketball team took a 79-69 victory over West Georgia in their season debut at Trustmark Arena.  With the win, the Falcons are now 3-1 on the year while West Georgia slips to 0-1 to start the season.

"That's college basketball, everybody has a chance to win.  Its all about going out and being focused for 40 minutes," said head coach Gary Van Atta. "We came out and played really well and set the tone, but you have to give West Georgia credit.  I thought our kids bent but did not break, I was really proud of how they hung in there and played hard but West Georgia is always a tough out."

The Falcons came out strong at the beginning of the game battling their way to a 17-point lead by the end of the first period.  Montevallo kept their foot on the gas pedal in the second period succeeding to a 23 point lead by halftime.

Montevallo continued its effort in the third quarter, going up as high as 31 points with 7:07 left in the period.  The Wolves soon began to cut into the Falcon lead ending the third down only 14 points.

The Wolves surged in the fourth quarter to cut the UM lead down to four points with 3:02 left to go.  The Falcons held on in the final minutes to secure the ten point victory over the UWG.

Jordan Jones led UM in production with 27 points, three steals, a rebound, and a block.

UP NEXT: Montevallo will travel up 65 to Samford University for an exhibition match, with tip-off set for Sunday, November 14th at 2:00 pm.
