Box Score BIRMINGHAM - The Falcons women's basketball team took a break from the regular season schedule to pay a visit to neighboring Samford University on Sunday afternoon. After playing the Bulldogs tough in the first half, the Falcons couldn't keep pace in a 70-55 loss. It was an exhibition for UM, while the game counted for the Division I Bulldogs.
The Falcons led most of the first half, racing out to an 8-point lead early. A layup by
Savannah Lee made in 12-4 midway through the first quarter. UM held on to take a 21-16 lead into the second period.Â
The Falcons had a 25-17 lead when Samford went on an 11-3 run to tied the game at 28-all. Then, Samford guard Andrea Cournoyer single-handedly took over down the stretch, scoring the last six points of the quarter to give the Bulldogs a 34-30 halftime lead.
The third quarter belonged to the Bulldogs who outscored the Falcons 22-11 en route to a commanding 56-41 lead. The Falcons couldn't overcome the deficit in the final period.
Lee led the Falcons with 15 points and 11 rebounds. She was 6-for-9 from the field and 3-for-6 from the line.Â
As a team, the Falcons were ice-cold from long range, hitting on only 3-of-25 shots from beyond the arc. The Falcons also had 23 turnovers.
The Falcons get back to the regular schedule on Friday against Clayton State at the UNG Nighthawk Classic in Dahlonega, Ga. Tipoff is scheduled for 4 p.m. ET. Then on Saturday at 2 p.m. ET, the Falcons will face another Top 10 team when they take on host No. 6 North Georgia on their home floor.
