DAHLONEGA, Ga. - The Montevallo women's basketball battled Clayton State Friday afternoon in Dahlonega, but fell short 70-58 after four quarters. With the loss the Falcons drop to 3-2 on the season, with the Lakers advancing to 2-0 for the year.
Montevallo took the court on a mission in the first quarter, going as high as eight points against CSU. The Lakers held their poise against the UM first quarter fury, cutting into the Falcon lead by the end of the period for a 14-12 score on the way to the second quarter.
Both teams showed toughness in the second quarter with Montevallo holding its lead for a brief moment in the period. That was until Clayton State rallied for a six point lead of their own, but the Falcons would answer to match the Laker score 25-25 by halftime.
The scoring was back and forth in the third quarter but the Lakers held the edge over UM 43-41 by the end of the period. The Falcons captured the lead by two points midway through the fourth quarter but Clayton State quickly replied with a 12-2 run leaving Montevallo with a 57-47 deficit with 4:43 left to go. UM fought but could not withstand the late scoring run of CSU, dropping the game 70-58.
The Falcons were led in scoring by Shyann Flack who scored 15 points and pulled down four rebounds in the game.
