HUNTSVILLE - West Georgia scored on a layup as time expired to sink the Montevallo men's basketball team 73-71 on Saturday afternoon at the Bill Penney Classic, hosted by Alabama-Huntsville. The Falcons fell to 1-3 with the heartbreaking loss.
The loss tarnished a spectacular day for
Jason King, who led the Falcons with 24 points. He made 9-of-11 fieldgoals, including 4-of-6 from 3-point range.
Xavier Malcom also had a solid game with 18 points on 6-of-10 shots, with four 3-pointers.
Aaris-Monte Bonds finished the game with a double-double, scoring 13 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.
The Falcons trailed 32-29 at halftime, but UWG threatened to run away in the second half, building a 12 point lead. A layup by Kadeim Jones gave the Wolves a 55-43 lead with 8:56 remaining in the game.
UWG maintained a double-digit lead until the last five minutes of the game when the Falcons began to chip away at the deficit. A 10-2 run by UM trimmed the UWG lead to three points. Malcom buried a 3-pointer with 2:31 left to make the score 64-61.
The Wolves fought off the Falcons momentarily, taking a 68-61 lead into the last 1:16 of the game. A minute later, the Wolves knocked down a pair of freethrows with 16 seconds left to take a 71-68 lead. Then, King nailed a bucket from deep to tied the score at 71-all with 11 seconds left.
After a timeout, West Georgia worked the clock down and Keshawn Heard laid in the game-winner as the buzzer sounded.
The Falcons hope to rebound on Sunday afternoon against Columbus State on the final day of the Bill Penney Classic. Tip-off is at high noon at Spragins Hall.
