UM Women's Basketball Upsets #11 Tampa at D2 Tipoff Classic

BILLINGS, MT - The Montevallo women's basketball team poured in a school record 14 3-pointers in an 81-67 upset of the 11th-ranked Tampa Spartans on Saturday at the D2 Tipoff Classic. The Falcons evened their record at 1-1 with the win, bouncing back from their season-opening setback to top-ranked Lubbock Christian on Friday. Meanwhile, Tampa fell to 1-1.

Head Coach Gary Van Atta was flying high after team's performance. "I'm extremely proud of the way we played." he said after the game.

Senior guard Kiya Sain led the Falcons with 23 points. She led the three point onslaught, hitting 5-of-9 from deep. Senior guard Jordan Jones hit 4-of-6 from beyond the arc and finished with 16 points, while junior guard Michaella Edwards had two 3-pointers on five attempts and finished with 10 points. Junior guard Marisa Snodgrass set the table for the Falcons sharpshooters, dishing out 13 assists.

The Falcons came out firing in the first quarter, shooting 62.5%  (10--of-16) from the field and taking a 26-17 lead after the first 10 minutes.  But, Tampa dominated the second quarter, outscoring UM 20-10 to take a 37-36 halftime lead. In the third quarter, Tampa looked as though they were about the run away in the third quarter, taking a 57-48 lead with 2:45 left. However, the Falcons finished the quarter with a 13-2 run to take a 61-59 lead into the fourth quarter,

"We went up early in the game, but lost the lead by halftime. In the 3rd quarter, got behind by nine.," said Van Atta. "Then we raised our level of intensity."

The fourth was all Falcons. They scored 16 of the first 18 points of the quarter, roaring out to a 77-61 lead. The eruption by UM put away the favored Spartans as they managed only eight points in the quarter, while the Falcons rolled up 20.

"We did a good job of recognizing what they were doing and made adjustments accordingly," Van Atta commented. "We had great bench play and stormed back to take the lead heading into the 4th. Down the stretch made play after on both ends of the floor and were able hold Tampa off. Tampa is a great team. Coach Tom Jesse has does a phenomenal job."

The Falcons have one more game in Billings on Sunday afternoon against against Simon-Fraser. Tip-off is scheduled for 11:45 a.m.
