Falcons Women's Hoops Off to a Fast Start After 2-1 Weekend

BILLINGS, MT - Four players scored in double-figures as the Montevallo women's basketball team beat Simon Fraser from the Great Northwest Conference, 79-72, on the final day of competition at the D2 Tip-off Classic. With the win, the Falcons improved to 2-1 to start the season.

Senior forward Jennifer Andrew had 18 points and six rebounds to lead the way for UM. She was an efficient 7-for-11 from the field and 4-for-5 from the freethrow line. Fellow senior, guard Jordan Jones added 16 points on 7-of-12 shooting, which included a pair of 3-pointers.  Senior forward Shyan Flack had a double-double, finishing with 14 points and 11 rebounds. She knocked down 6-of-12 fieldgoals and 2-of-4 from the charity line. Senior guard Kiya Sain rounded out the double-digit parade with 10 points on 5-of-12 shooting.

For the game, the Falcons shot 47% of their shots (31-of-66). After a record-breaking effort from beyond the arc in the win over Tampa, UM cooled off from long range, hitting only two shots from deep. Fortunately, they wouldn't need it.

"Tough opponent,  tough game," said head coach Gary Van Atta. " The girls weathered SF's runs the entire game. We did what we needed to do to win. This is why we came to Montana, to play against top teams and learn to compete at a high level."

The Falcons came out firing, rolling out to a 15-0 lead. However, SFU settled down and trimmed the UM lead to 39-37 at halftime. In the third quarter, SFU cut the lead to 43-42 with 7:03 left. But, the Falcons outscored SFU 15-3 the last seven minutes to take a commanding 58-45 lead into the final quarter.

In the fourth, SFU rallied to get within a possession at 60-57 with 6:32 left. But, once again, the Falcons answered with an 8-1 run to reclaim a double-digit lead at 68-58 with 4:20 remaining. With less than a minute left, SFU closed to within four, 73-69, but UM held on down the stretch to put the game away.

Next up: The Falcons return home to host West Georgia in a non-conference game on Friday, Nov. 12. The game will be a business-persons special tipping off at 1 p.m. at Trustmark Arena.
