UM takes AUM 69-58 in GSC opener

MONTEVALLO – Forward Shyan Flack led the Falcons with a double-double in the Gulf South Conference opener against Auburn University Montgomery, scoring 20 points and snatching 13 rebounds. With the win the Montevallo advances to 4-4 and 1-0 in conference, with the Warhawks falling to 4-1 for a 0-1 GSC record.
 
Guard Kiya Sain pitched in with 15 points and 10 rebounds, and forward Savannah Lee wrapped up the double digits with 11 points.
 
Scrappy and high-energy from the start, the Falcons got a lead with five minutes to go in the first quarter with a three-pointer by guard Anna Katherine (A.K.) Eastman, who shot 100% from downtown to contribute 9 points.  The Warhawks answered the threat by finishing the final minute of the first quarter 21-17.
 
The Falcons started the second quarter with a 5-0 run. AUM gained the lead back by outrebounding the Falcons and scoring transition baskets. AUM held the lead the entire quarter until the Falcons made another run to go ahead 35-32.
 
The Falcons secured the lead for most of the third quarter, garnering defensive stops and outrebounding the Warhawks.
 
It didn't take long for AUM tie it up 44-44 with an 8-0 run, two minutes to go in the third quarter. AUM outscored the Falcons 14-2, ending with 50-46.
 
Montevallo relentlessly outscored AUM 23-8 in the fourth quarter, creating the largest lead of 11-0. Solid defense gave the Falcons a win of 69-58, improving their record to 4-4.
 
Despite the win, the Falcons were only 35% (19-54) from the field but were 80% (24-30) from the free-throw line.

UP NEXT: The Falcons will match up against Mississippi College on Sunday, December 12th with tip-off set for 2:00 PM in Trustmark Arena.
