MONTEVALLO, Ala. - Montevallo beat West Georgia 7-5 on Friday night to take the first game of a three-game Gulf South Conference series.
The Falcons timely offense, led by junior
Riley Cain (Steele, Missouri), and clutch pitching, were able to overcome four errors by the Falcons defense. Cain was 3-for-4 with a home run, two runs scored and two stolen bases.
Asa Awbrey (Carrollton, Georgia) was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored.
The Falcons (2-2) were able to answer back and steal the momentum away from the Wolves (2-2) in both innings that West Georgia tilted the game in their favor.
Montevallo got their first run of the game in the bottom of the second inning with a one-out sacrifice fly by
Mitch Fleming (Milton, Georgia). The freshman first baseman knocked in
Ben Teel (Homewood, Ala.), who reached on a hit-by-pitch, stole second and moved to third on a
Jake Smallwood (Decatur, Alabama) sacrifice bunt.
West Georgia turned around in the top of the third and plated two unearned runs off Falcons starter
Hogan Isbell (Leighton, Alabama).
The Falcons answered back in the bottom of the third inning and retook the lead 4-2 with three runs. Wooten started the inning with a hit-by-pitch and
Greg Lewandoski (Port Orange, Florida) reached on a throwing error by Wolves' starting pitcher Robert Coleman. Wooten later scored on a wild pitch. Cain then walked and Awbry drove in both Lewandoski and Cain on a one-out single to right field.
The Wolves chased Isbell in the fifth inning and later in the inning pushed two runs across on a two-run homerun by first baseman Dan Oberst.
Isbell worked 4.1 innings allowing three runs, one earned, on five hits. He recording four strikeouts and two walks.
Montevallo second answer-back saw Cain give the Falcons back the lead for good, when he deposited a 2-0 fastball into the trees in right field. Later in the inning, Awbry doubled to right field, Teel singled to center and Smallwood safety squeezed Awbry home for a 6-4 lead.
Montevallo pushed their lead to 7-4 with an unearned run in the sixth inning.
Joel Cheatwood (Chelsea, Alabama) earned his first win of the year, working 2.0+ innings of relief. The senior struck out two, walked one and his lone hit and run allowed was the homerun by Oberst.
Chandler Ingram (Huntsville, Ala.) earned his first save of the year, recording the last eight outs of the game. Ingram entered in the top of the seventh inning, with runners on first and second, and induced a ground ball and fly ball to get the Falcons out of the jam.
The Wolves rallied in the ninth, pushed across an unearned run with two outs, but Ingram got John Michael McRae to fly out to center field with runners at first and third, to end the threat and the game.
Montevallo and West Georgia will wrap up their series Sunday afternoon with a doubleheader scheduled for 12:00pm at Kermit A. Johnson Field at Bob Riesener Stadium.
