MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The Montevallo baseball team took the series over West Georgia, in a tightly contested 4-2 victory at Kermit A. Johnson.
"Proud of our guys for fighting all day! That's why you play all 9 innings and keep grinding," said head coach
Chandler Rose.
UM had a rough first start in game two of Sunday's double header. West Georgia took an early 2-0 lead over the Falcons in the top of the second. The game then went cold as both teams failed to put in any runs for multiple innings.
The game started to take a turn after veteran pitcher
Chandler Ingram took over the pitching duties for Montevallo at the top of the eighth. Montevallo went three and out behind Ingrams leadership on the mound striking out two wolves to give the Falcons a chance to survive.
That momentum led to a
Khalid Collymore single to center field to get UM on base. During the next at bat Asa Awbry followed up with a single towards right field that sent Collymore to second.
Ben Teel did not disappoint during his next at bat as he single off of UWG's pitcher to make the bases loaded against the Wolves.
A
Jake Smallwood single down the middle sent Awbry and Collymore's tying runs to home plate. UM put in two additional runs during the inning after a wild pitch made way for a
Ben Teel score and a
Ryan Curran sac allowed for Smallwood to score.
Ingram would come back to finish the job with two strike outs during the top of the ninth. The Falcon victory was secured after the Wolves grounded out at second base.
"Ingram is a special young man without a doubt. He's an incredible person and a great leader. It was amazing to see him rally the team tonight and it was fun to see them respond. That was a big series win for us!"
