Montevallo shuts out Union in first game of Saturday doubleheader, 9-0

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo baseball team defeated Union at home on Saturday in the first game of a doubleheader, 9-0. UM is now 4-3 on the year and 4-3 in Gulf South Conference play. Due to weather, the games were moved to Montevallo, but UM will play as the away team this weekend.

After no scoring in the third, UM put up three more runs in the fourth inning. Smallwood got his third and fourth RBIs of the game by crushing a two-run homer to left field. Later in the inning, Ryan Curran knocked a double into left center field that sent Reed Latimer home and gave the Falcons an 8-0 lead.

Union and UM were not able to light up the scoreboard in the fifth or sixth innings, but Montevallo added yet another insurance run in the seventh.

In the seventh, Awbrey hit a sacrifice fly to right field that allowed Cain to score for the third time in the ball game and gave UM a 9-0 lead.
