UM pulls off come back over UWF in Pensacola

PENSACOLA, Fla. - The Montevallo Falcons bounced back on the road Saturday, Feb 13 for a much needed win that stopped a three game losing streak and got Danny Young's squad back to .500 on the season. UM used a big second half where the guys shot over 50% from the floor to keep the Argonauts at a distance for the 65-60 comeback win.

The first half was rough for the Falcons still smarting from a tough loss the night before. The team shot 7-27 from the field, but struggled mightily from long distance where they took over half their field goal attempts going 3-15.

In the meantime, West Florida built double digit leads three different times with the largest being 32-15 with 1:42 to go before halftime. Latrell Carter and Xavier Malcom beach had six points, but the rest of the Falcons would follow in short order after halftime where the Falcons trailed by 14.

Down 37-24 a couple of minutes into the second half UM made their biggest run of the game reeling off 13 of the next 14 points to draw within one of the Argos at 38-37. Malcom had his final two three pointers during the run with Bob Carroll adding four more in the spurt.

90 seconds later Montevallo recaptured their first lead since early in the first half and the back-and-forth affair began. The two Gulf South Conference rivals would trade the lead 11 times over the final ten minutes and change in a thrilling finish.

The Falcons shot better than 50% in the second half to seize momentum and take over and did so by crashing the paint. 16 of the team's final 28 came down low as multiple players gashed the Argonauts defense. Montevallo also came up with stops on their final four defensive plays to ice the win.

Xavier Malcom led a balanced offensive attack for UM with 13 points. Shannon Woody had one of his best games of the year with 11 points and eight rebounds while James McNeil added 10 points after 21 the night before. Bob Carroll chipped in nine points with eight rebounds, six assists and three steals.

UP NEXT: The Falcons will return to action Tuesday, Feb 16 and will face Auburn-Montgomery to begin a four game home stand. The game is set to begin at 6 p.m.
