MONTEVALLO, Ala. – After winning game one of Saturday's doubleheader, the University of Montevallo softball team fell to the University of Alabama at Huntsville, 14-6. Montevallo is now 1-5 on the season and 1-1 in Gulf South Conference play after splitting the doubleheader.
Unlike the first game, UAH was able to get the bats going. The Chargers put two runs on the board in the top of the first but left two runners stranded. After
Kinley Adams and
Hannah Carey earned walks, UM struck back thanks to a three-run homer by
Carlee Mullinax.
The Falcons held UAH scoreless in the second and third before lighting up the scoreboard again in the home half of the third.
Sawyer Martin started off the inning with solo home run to left center to get things going.
Holly LaForce Henderson then singled up the middle, and later scored on a
Mariel Bertossi sacrifice fly.
Avery Witten reached first after being hit by a pitch and scored while
Alexis Cortez was caught trying to steal. From that point on, the Chargers took control of the game.
UAH put up six runs in the fourth and another six runs in the fifth while holding UM scoreless for the rest of the night.
Aside from Mullinax's three-run homer, Martin led UM at the plate in the second game, going 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI. LaForce Henderson also went 2-for-3 with one run scored. Cortez went 2-for-2.
