UM softball drops rubber match to UAH, 8-6

MONTEVALLO, Ala.—The University of Montevallo softball team lost a series-deciding game to the University of Alabama at Huntsville on Sunday afternoon, 8-6. UM won the first game of yesterday's doubleheader before falling to the Chargers in the final two games of the home series. The Falcons now own 1-6 record with a 1-2 mark in Gulf South Conference play.

UAH got on the scoreboard right off the bat with two runs in the top of the first. Montevallo's Kinley Adams (New Market, Alabama), who went 5-for-5 on the day with two runs and an RBI, started things off with a double as the leadoff batter in the home half of the first. Adams was able to cross home plate after Lauren Higginbotham hit a grounder to third that resulted in a double play.

After a quick top of the second, Montevallo sent another run home to tie the game at 2-2 heading into the third. Holly LaForce Henderson (Irvington, Ala.) singled to get things started in the bottom of the second, and was later sent home thanks to an Alexis Cortez (Bonaire, Georgia) single to left field. UM then loaded the bases with two outs, but left all three runners stranded.

After a Fallon Groves (Ocean Springs, Mississippi) single in the bottom of the fourth, Avery Witten (Katy, Texas) came into the game as a pinch runner. Adams stepped up again later in the inning, knocking a single up the middle to bring Witten home and give the Falcons their first lead of the game, 3-2. Montevallo loaded the bases once again, this time with one out, but a double play to end the fourth left runners stranded for the second inning in a row.

UAH responded by exploding for five runs in the top of the fifth to reclaim the lead and held it for the remainder of the game. Montevallo gave a valiant comeback effort, scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth to make it a 7-6 game, but the rally was halted there. Sierra Easterwood (Cullman, Alabama) hit a two-RBI double into left field that allowed Adams and Cortez to score in the sixth. Gabrielle Ginnis (Lakewood, Washington) then hit a grounder to shortstop that let Easterwood touch home plate. Montevallo loaded the bases yet again with two outs, but could not add any more runs.

The Chargers added a security run in the top of the seventh to give them an 8-6 lead. Adams was able to get her fifth hit of the game in the bottom of the seventh, but was left stranded on first to end the game.

To go along with Adams' 5-for-5 day, Easterwood went 1-for-2 with two RBIs, three walks and a run. Cortez went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run, and LaForce Henderson went 2-for-4 with a run.

UP NEXT: Montevallo will take to the road next weekend to face Union University in a three-game non-conference series starting with a doubleheader on Saturday, Feb. 27, at 3 p.m.
