MONTEVALLO, Ala.—The University of Montevallo softball team won their first game of the season on Saturday afternoon, defeating the University of Alabama at Huntsville 6-1 in the first game of a doubleheader. The Falcons are now 1-4 on the season and own a 1-0 record in Gulf South Conference play.
Defense and playing error free in the field made the difference in game one of the doubleheader for UM.
Kaylee Hawkins had a standout performance in the circle, pitching all seven innings while allowing one earned run on three hits and striking out four.
After a 1-2-3 inning in the first from Hawkins, the Falcons stepped up to the plate.
Kinley Adams got things going with a leadoff single then got in scoring position on a passed ball. After a pair of walks and an Adams stolen base, the bases were loaded with no outs.
Fallon Groves then stepped to the plate and knocked a single into right field that sent Adams and Easterwood across home plate.
Neither team was able to get on the board in the second, third or fourth innings with only one hit over that span.
After another three-up, three-down inning in the top of the fifth from Hawkins, Montevallo got the bats going once again.
Adams led off the bottom of the fifth with an infield single, and after a pair of walks the bases were once again loaded with no outs.
Carlee Mullinax stepped to the plate and was hit by a pitch to send Easterwood home from third and keep the bases loaded.
Lauren Higginbotham then came in as a pinch hitter and reached on a fielder's choice that allowed
Hannah Carey to score and put UM up 4-0.
The Chargers got one run back in the top of the sixth, but Montevallo tacked on two more in the home half of the sixth.
Sawyer Martin scored after Carey was walk with the bases loaded, and Adams scored again, this time on an error. Hawkins did the rest and had another 1-2-3 inning in the top of the seventh to put the game away.
Adams led the Falcons at the plate hitting 2-for-4 and scoring two runs. Groves went 1-for-2 on the day with two RBIs.
