Falcons offense erupts in Game 2 of DH

MONTEVALLO, Ala. - The University of Montevallo pounded out thirteen runs on thirteen hits in a 13-3 win to even the series with the Union University Bulldogs in game two of the Gulf South Conference doubleheader on Saturday night.

After stranding seventeen runners in a 3-2 loss in game one, the Falcons took out all of their game-one offensive frustrations on the Bulldogs in game two. Lauren Higginbotham (Warrior, Alabama) led the way for the Falcons, as she collected four hits, scored three runs and cleared the bases with a three-RBI double in the 7th inning, to put the game out of reach.

Sierra Easterwood (Cullman, Alabama) was excellent in the circle for Montevallo (4-7). Easterwood (2-0) got all 21 outs for the Falcons in a rare seven-inning non-complete game performance. Easterwood worked five scoreless innings and then re-entered the circle in the top of the sixth inning after the Bulldogs scored two quick runs off the Falcons bullpen. Easterwood allowed just one run on four hits, with two strikeouts, in her seven innings of work.

Montevallo took advantage of three Bulldogs (2-9) errors in the second inning to take an early 2-0 lead.

After an RBI single by Kinley Adams (New Market, Alabama) and a three-run blast from Carlee Mullinax (Lincoln, Alabama) in the fourth, the Falcons led 6-0. Mullinax's homerun was her second of the season.

Union answered back in the fifth inning with three runs of their own.

Sawyer Martin (Pelham, AL) sent a two-run homerun over the left field wall in the sixth inning to gave the Falcons an 8-3 lead, also her second four-bagger of the year.

Higginbotham's three-RBI double in the seventh inning gave her a team-leading nine RBI on the season. The freshman has knocked in nine in just 18 at-bats and is hitting .500 (9-18) on the year.

Adams continued her hot streak for the Falcons, grabbing two hits, two runs scored, four stolen bases and an RBI. The freshman notched her fourth multi-hit game in nine starts of her young career. She is also hitting .500 (13-26) on the season.

The Falcons stole eight bases in the game, a season high.

UP NEXT: Montevallo and Union play the rubber match of the series Sunday morning at 11:00 am at Orr Park.
