MONTEVALLO, Ala. - The Montevallo Falcons baseball team kicked off their Gulf South Conference schedule Friday, Feb 4 with a doubleheader against the 23rd ranked University of Alabama-Huntsville Chargers.
Falcons got good play from their pitching staff, especially the bullpen, but fell short in the offensive end dropping the first game of the day to the Chargers 3-1. The visiting Chargers took advantage of two early walks in the bottom of the first inning and loaded the bases with one out.
Hogan Isbell struck out the next batter, but couldn't keep UAH off the scoreboard as Colin Turner singled to center field scoring two runners before the end of the inning. Montevallo responded immediately as
Riley Cain singled to right field to lead off the inning. He would score two batters later on a passed ball to cut into the early deficit.
The Falcons would only be able to add a couple more hits the rest of the game as UAH received a great opening day performance from Tyler Self.
Self (1-0) gave up just two hits in seven innings while striking out six with no walks. UAH would add one more run in the third inning on Hogan (0-1) who gave up just four hits, but was tagged for all three of the Chargers runs. The rest of the Falcons' bullpen gave up three more hits but no runs.
Third baseman
Reed Latimer accounted for both of Montevallo's other two hits.
