Tables turn as the Falcons fail to complete comeback against Valdosta

MONTEVALLO, Ala. - One night after Montevallo survived a furious comeback by Valdosta State, the tables were turned as the Falcons, behind by 18 points with 8:02 remaining staged their own comeback.  Montevallo cut into Valdosta's lead trailing the Blazers by only 3 points with :12 seconds remaining to make the score 76-73.   Valdosta secured the 79-73 victory by making three free throws to close out the game.   Montevallo falls to 4-3 in the GSC while the win pushes Valdosta to a 10-4 record.
 
The Falcons were led by James McNeill who scored 17 points, added a team high 9 rebounds and stole the ball twice.  McNeil leads the GSC in steals at 2.9 per game.   Travarus "Bob" Carroll, the fifth leading rebound in the GSC at 7.0 rebounds a game, scored 12 points with 8 rebounds.  Xavier Malcolm and Braxton Bertolette scored 11 and 10 respectively as the Falcons attempted to beat the Blazers two days in a row.   Montevallo currently trails Lee and Valdosta in the Eastern Division standings. 
 
Montevallo trailed by 13 at the half as Valdosta dominated the offensive boards grabbing 16 offensive rebounds that led to 11 second chance points.   Valdosta extended the lead to 18 points until the never give-up Falcons caught fire and scored 12 straight to cut the lead to 70-64.  A layup by Bertolette, three-pointer by Carroll, layup by Shannon Woody, layup by Carroll and Mason Shifflet came off the bench and nailed a three pointer fueled the comeback making the score 70-64 with 4:26 remaining.  The teams then traded baskets over the next four minutes until McNeil's three pointer made it a three point game with :12 seconds on the clock.
 
Valdosta was led by Cam Hamilton for the second night in a row as he scored 17 points on 7-11 from the field.  Valdosta shot 41.8% from the field, 30.3% from three point land and were 13-19 in free throw attempts.   The Falcons shot 40.3% from the field, 35.7% from three and made 13 out of 16 free throws.

UP NEXT:  The Falcons remain at home on Tuesday night facing West Georgia with tip-off scheduled for 6:00 pm.
