Falcon's take first win of the season 10-6 over UAH

MONTEVALLO, Ala. - The Montevallo Falcons baseball team took their first win of the 2021 season with a high-scoring victory over the no. 23 ranked UAH Chargers 10-6 Saturday, Feb 6.

The Chargers came out swinging putting their first two batters on base for Colin Brewer who sent a double down the left field line for a 2-0 lead. Brewer later scored on a sacrifice fly. Griffin Rivers finished the scoring for UAH coming home on Zach Duvall's single. UM didn't waste time and came back with their biggest inning of the series.

Asa Awbrey singled home Riley Cain and Khalid Collymore to start things off and Awbrey was rewarded as Jake Smallwood bouncer a single up the lift side to send him home. Smallwood became the go ahead run as Reed Latimer doubled to left center scoring Ben Teel to tie the game. Ryan Curran grounded out next, but Smallwood had advanced to third and scored to give the Falcons the lead. Latimer added the final run of the inning as he too scored on a ground out for the 6-4 lead. The final eight innings couldn't pack the punch the first inning did, but there was a little drama that would unfold.

Tyler McCown reached on a throwing error, advanced to second base and was immediately singled home by Garrett Bodine. The Chargers would not threaten the rest of the inning and Montevallo regained the two run advantage and more with a three run response in the bottom of the second inning. Riley Cain and Khalid Collymore would score again on two UAH errors then Reed Latimer sent Jake Smallwood in for his second run of the game with a single to the right side.

Collymore would add his game-high third run in the bottom of the fourth to put the icing on the Falcons' first win. Smallwood and Latimer both had two hits to lead UM with Latimer adding two RBI. Asa Awbrey added a hit and three RBI for the Falcons. Zach Toth performed admirably in relief allowing just one hit and one run while striking out five in 3.1 innings. Chandler Ingram took the win pitching the final three innings for Montevallo also allowing a hit and a run with two strikeouts.

UP NEXT: Montevallo (1-2) will resume play next weekend on Saturday, Feb 13 with a doubleheader versus West Georgia starting at 1 p.m. and the third game on Sunday, Feb 14 also at 1 p.m
