Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Vaesen shines, UM rolls to 29-8 win at Chowan University

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – It was a record-setting day for the University of Montevallo men's lacrosse team as the Falcons' offense caught fire and defeated Chowan University 29-8 on the road on Wednesday afternoon. UM is now 2-4 on the year and has yet to play a Peach Belt Conference game.

Thomas Vaesen had the hot hand all afternoon and scored a program record 12 goals in the win. Vaesen broke his own record of 11 goals, which he scored twice in the 2019 season. To go along with a new program record in goals scored, Vaesen also had a program-record-tying 14 points. Vaesen finished one goal shy of tying the NCAA Division II record for goals scored in a game.

UM got things going quickly, as Spencer Seiler, Trevayne Hunter, Connor Frederick and Vaesen each found the back of the net in the first 10 minutes to put the Falcons ahead 4-0 with 5:34 left in the first quarter. The Hawks scored the next two goals unanswered to cut the deficit to 4-2. Jackson Klewchuck and Ryan Shea then each netted a goal in the last 38 seconds of the quarter to push the Montevallo lead back to four heading into the second stanza.

Kordell Primus and Shea scored a goal a piece to open the second, but were cancelled out by two Chowan goals to keep the UM lead at just four. UM then scored four unanswered goals, three from Vaesen and one from Frederick, to take a 12-4 lead into the half.

The Falcons and Vaesen, who had eight goals in the third, picked up right where they left off to open the second half. Montevallo scored the first seven goals of the third. Vaesen put in five of those seven while Hunter and Coleman Hargis had one a piece during the run. UM then scored five more unanswered to end the third after a goal from the Hawks. Vaesen scored three of those five while Zach Laberge and Jaden Prosser added one each to give the Falcons a 24-5 lead after three.

Montevallo's Henry Casement scored two goals in the fourth to go along with a goal a piece from Anthony Pecoraro, Nick Nguyen and Mitchell Summers in the quarter.

Montevallo's 29 goals in today's game are the second best in program history, just one shy of the tying the program record.

UP NEXT: UM will travel to Barton College for another non-conference matchup at 11 a.m. on Friday, March 12.
