Falcons pull through in set four to take 3-1 win on Senior Night

MONTEVALLO,Ala. - The University of Montevallo volleyball team remained perfect on the spring season with a 3-1 (25-15, 25-18, 24-26, 26-24) win over Auburn University Montgomery on Thursday night at Trustmark Arena. The Falcons remain perfect on the season with a 3-0 GSC, 8-0 overall record and remain in first place in Group B of the Gulf South Conference standings.  AUM falls to 2-1.

It was senior night as Emily McCook and Amanda Nugent were honored in prematch ceremonies.  Nugent, a GSC 2nd team all-conference selection in 2018, wrapped up the evening and what her team means to her. "It is an indescribable feeling being on this team for four years," said Nugent. "There have been ups and downs this season but it's good to know that I have been able to have a senior season despite the struggles with COVID."

The Falcons got off to a great starting winning the first two sets with excellent all around play.   UM opened the match with great defense at the net and a timely attack registering 18 kills with a hitting percentage of .316.

The second set was very much the same as Nugent and Evelina Teran led the Falcons.  Setter Savannah Roys, who has worked through an injury this spring, has continued to improve and had a big night leading the Falcons attack.

AUM came back to win a hard fought third set.  The fourth set proved to be very much like the third with AUM taking the quick lead but the Falcons battled throughout to win the set and match.

It was a total team effort with sophomores Morgan Huffman, Sydney Smith and Isabell Fuell along with freshmen Allie Dishman and Casey Hendrixson contributing to the Falcon victory.

Head coach Katie O'Brien talked about the night and season moving forward. "We knew going in it would be tough but our team rose to the challenge.   We need to stay healthy and stay fresh as we prepare for the final two teams of the season."

UP NEXT:   The Falcons travel to Montgomery, AL on March 20 to play Shorter and Lee University for the final two matches of the year.  The GSC Spring Series will move to bracket play on March 26 and 27.   UM is attempting to stay in first or second in Group B to receive a first round bye and move into the quarterfinals
