MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Montevallo baseball team fell to Christian Brothers University 3-2 in the first game of a doubleheader on Friday. UM is now 7-9 on the season and 4-9 in Gulf South Conference play.
It was a defensive-minded game on both sides. The Bucs scored all three of their runs in the second inning and held the on for the win, despite a late push from Montevallo.
Montevallo was without a hit through their first two innings at the plate when CBU opened the game's scoring. The Bucs got on the board first with their three runs in the second, putting the Falcons in a hole early.
UM earned one back in the fourth inning when
Khalid Collymore, who reached base after being hit by a pitch, scored on a wild pitch to make it a 3-1 game.
Montevallo got on the board once again in the sixth.
Ben Teel doubled to left field with two outs to get in scoring position. Teel was then brought home on a
Jake Smallwood single to cut the Bucs' lead to 3-2.
The Falcons threatened to take the lead in the bottom of the eighth, but could not manage to get on the board. Collymore singled and
Asa Awbrey was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second with one out. Both runners advanced on a wild pitch to put the tying and go-ahead runs just 90 and 180 feet away. Both runners were stranded as UM struck out swinging in the next two at-bats.
Ryan Curran got on base after singling in the ninth, but was left stranded at first.
Smallwood led the Falcons at the plate, going 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Curran also went 2-for-4.
Hogan Isbell got the start for Montevallo on the hill. He gave up three earned runs on six hits while striking out seven.
