MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The University of Montevallo baseball team defeated Christian Brothers University 6-1 in the second game of Friday's doubleheader. The Falcons are now 8-9 overall and 5-9 in Gulf South Conference play after the win.
CBU got on the board in the bottom of the first with one run. Once the UM defense and pitching staff settled in, the Bucs were not able to find the scoreboard again. Montevallo allowed just three hits over the entirety of the ball game.
After CBU got one run on the board in the bottom of the first, the Falcons came right back with three of their own in the top of the second.
Ben Teel earned a walk to reach first base and advanced to second on an error.
Jake Smallwood sent Teel across home plate when he grounded out to second and made it a 1-1 game.
Ryan Curran then stepped into the box and was hit by a pitch to give UM a baserunner with two outs. A
Reed Latimer single put runners on first and second.
Ty Wooton stepped up to the plate next and knocked a double into left field that sent Curran home. Latimer was then able to come home from third on a wild pitch and made it a 3-1 game.
The pitchers were dueling in the third through seventh innings, as only three combined hits were recorded.
Montevallo added three more runs in the bottom of the eighth to extend their lead and put the game out of reach.
Asa Awbrey led things off with a double to right field. Right after Awbrey's double, Teel stepped up to the plate and hit a double to center field that put runners on second and third. A Greg Lewandowski double down the left field line sent Teel and Awbrey home and pushed the UM lead to 5-1. Smallwood stepped up to the plate next, singled through the right side and sent Lewandowski home to make it a 6-1 game.
Montevallo loaded up the bases in the top of the ninth, but left all the runners stranded.
Zach Toth got the start and win for UM on the hill, tossing five complete innings, allowing two hits and striking out five.
Chandler Ingram pitched 2.2 innings, allowed two hits and also struck out five.
Smallwood led the Falcons at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Lewandowski went 1-for-4 and also had two RBIs. Latimer went 2-for-3 with a run.
UP NEXT: UM will face the Bucs in the series rubber match today at 1 p.m. at CBU.
