Falcons Drop Doubleheader to Flames

CLEVELAND, Tenn. – The Montevallo Falcons dropped both games of their doubleheader against Lee University on Saturday afternoon in Cleveland, Tennessee. The Falcons dropped the first game 5-0 and the second game 3-2.

In game one, the Falcons' offense could not get anything going against the Flames pitching staff. Montevallo was limited to three hits in the loss.

Lee scored single runs in the first and second innings and added two more runs in the third to take a 4-0 lead.

The Flames added a single run in the fifth inning to extend their lead to 5-0.

Logan Samuels (Winfield, Alabama) threw well out of the bullpen for Montevallo, working 2.1 innings of scoreless relief. The freshman struck out two, did not allow a hit and walked one.

Alex Langford (Millington, Tennessee) provided a pinch-hit double in the eighth inning, giving UM runners on second and third with two outs, but both runners were stranded.

In game two, UM (9-12, 6-12) again got good pitching performances but fell short in another pitchers' duel.

Lee struck first in the bottom of the fourth, scoring two runs.

The Flames extended their lead to 3-0 in the seventh inning.

Montevallo tightened the Flames' lead in the top of the eighth when they struck for two runs. Ty Wooton (Collierville, Tenn.) began the inning with a walk and advanced to third on a wild pitch and later a passed ball. Greg Lewandoski (Port Orange, Florida) drew a one-out walk to put runners at first and third. Jake Smallwood (Decatur, Alabama) drove in the first Falcons' run on a fielder's choice to first base. Smallwood came around to score later in the inning on a dropped fly ball by Lee's center fielder.

UM had a chance to tie the ballgame in the ninth after a pinch-hit double by Asa Awbrey (Carrollton, Georgia) but could not push Awbry across.

NEXT UP: The Falcons host two spring break non-conference midweek games on Tuesday and Wednesday. Montevallo will take on Spring Hill College on Tuesday at 3pm and Miles College on Wednesday at 2pm.
