Awbrey & Colly-More Than The Tigers Can Handle

MONTEVALLO, Ala. - Asa Awbry and Khalid Collymore led the charge for the Montevallo Falcons over the West Alabama Tigers on Thursday night at Kermit A. Johnson Field at Bob Riesener Stadium. The freshman duo was a combined 7-for-8 with eight RBI and five runs scored in the 14-4 win. Awbrey (Carrollton, Georgia) was 3-for-4 with six RBI and three runs scored while Collymore (Mississauga, Ontario, Canada) was 4-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored.

The Falcons (10-12, 7-12 GSC) got the scoring started in the second inning. Awbry led off the inning with a walk and stole second base. Alex Langford (Millington, Tennessee) then singled through the left side to give the Falcons runners at first and third. After a wild pitch that got Langford to second, with two outs, Collymore singled the left field, scoring both runners for a 2-0 lead.

Montevallo added a run in the third inning on an Awbry RBI single through the right side, scoring Jake Smallwood (Decatur, Alabama).

UM exploded for four runs and a 7-0 lead in the fourth inning. Ben Teel (Homewood, Ala.) singled home Riley Cain (Steele, Missouri) with no outs in the inning. With two outs, Awbry singled through the right side, scoring Collymore. Reed Latimer (Scottsboro, Alabama) then hit a stand-up triple down the right field line to knock in Teel and Awbry.

A couple of sacrifice flies in the fifth inning extended the Falcons lead to 9-0. Teel scored Ty Wooton (Collierville, Tenn.) on his sacrifice fly to centerfield and Smallwood brought home Cain on his sacrifice fly to right field.

West Alabama (9-11, 7-10) got on the board in the fifth inning, scoring four runs to cut the deficit to 9-4.

Collymore started the seventh inning with a base hit to left field, his fourth hit of the game. After a Teel single, Smallwood doubled home Collymore for a 10-4 lead. Greg Lewandoski (Port Orange, Florida) drew a walk to load the bases and Awbry sent the first pitch he saw into the trees in right field for a game-ending grand slam and a 14-4 win.

The Falcons had 16 hits on the night, Teel, Smallwood and Latimer all had two RBI in the game.

Falcons' opener Logan Samuels (Winfield, Alabama) threw well in his three innings of work, allowing no runs on one hit and striking out two.
