MONTEVALLO, Ala. - Mychael McMillan's masterful complete game shutout and clutch two-out hitting propelled the Falcons past the Valdosta State Blazers 2-0 in game three of the Gulf South Conference series on Sunday afternoon.
Montevallo's starting pitcher
Mychael McMillan (Centerville, Alabama) was excellent from the start, striking out the first batter of the game and three in her first two innings of work. McMillan allowed just a tough-luck, check-swing, single out in front of home plate through the first two innings pitched.
Â
"Mychael told me before the game that 'we're going to dominate today' and did she ever back that up," said head coach
Lindsay Vanover. "I am so proud of how we competed today after the tough day we had yesterday. It would have been easy to roll over today but we didn't and I am so proud of our team for competing all day."
The Falcons (6-9, 4-5) struck in the bottom of the second, thanks to a couple of clutch two-out hits.
Avery Witten (Katy, Texas) dropped a one-out single down the left field line to start the rally. With two outs,
Brooke Ingram (Fort Payne, Alabama) dropped a double in almost the exact same spot to put runners on second and third.
Fallon Groves (Ocean Springs, Mississippi) drove both Falcons home with a clutch two-out single back up the middle, past a diving shortstop.
Â
"Ingram has been a great spark plug for us. She does everything we ask and brings great energy to our team," added Vanover. "She got everybody fired up today, I am so happy for her because her hard work is paying off."
McMillan continued her dominance through the fourth inning, not allowing a hit in the third or fourth innings.
Â
Montevallo mounted a rally in both the fourth and fifth innings but could not extend their 2-0 lead.
Â
Witten grabbed her second hit of the ballgame to start the fourth inning when she sent a 0-2 pitch through the right-side of the infield for a single. Ingram then sent a 0-2 pitch through the left-side for a single to give the Falcons runners at first and second with one one, but Montevallo could not capitalize.
Â
Adams bunt single got the Falcons going in the fifth inning.
Holly LaForce Henderson (Irvington, Ala.) bunted Adams over to second but Adams was stranded at second to end the inning.
Â
McMillan was at her best when it mattered most, in the seventh, after the Blazers (10-2, 8-1) put runners on second and third with no out. McMillan induced a groundball to
Sierra Easterwood (Cullman, Alabama) at third, who checked both runners and got the first out of the inning at first base. Â McMillan then got a popup to shortstop LaForce-Henderson for the second out and a groundball fielder's choice to LaForce-Henderson for the third out, killing the rally and securing the Falcons victory.
"We made a lot of great plays today and I know Mychael's mind was at ease knowing that if the ball got entered into play, she was getting an out," said Vanover.Â
