MONTEVALLO, Ala. – Montevallo dropped a pair of games to the West Alabama Tigers on Saturday, 6-5 in extra innings and 12-3.
In game one,
Jake Smallwood (Decatur, Alabama) singled home
Riley Cain (Steele, Missouri) in the first inning to start the scoring for the Falcons.
West Alabama answered back in the top of the second with a run of their own to tie the game 1-1.
The Tigers took their first lead of the weekend in the third inning, scoring two runs for a 3-1 lead.
A pair of doubles by
Ben Teel (Homewood, Ala.) and
Greg Lewandoski (Port Orange, Florida) tied the game 3-3 in the bottom of the fifth. With two outs in the inning,
Reed Latimer (Scottsboro, Alabama) knocked home Lewandoski with an RBI infield single to give the Falcons back the lead 4-3.
UWA again answered back in the next half inning, tying the game at 4-4.
The Tigers regained the lead in the seventh inning with a single run for a 5-4 lead.
But the Falcons fought back in the ninth. Teel led the inning off with a single, followed by a couple walks to Smallwood and
Asa Awbrey (Carrollton, Georgia). With the bases loaded, Latimer tied the game 5-5 with a one-out fielder's choice to force extra innings.
In the tenth inning, with the international tiebreaker being played and a runner placed on second base to start the inning, West Alabama pushed one run across to take a 6-5 lead.
The Falcons had runners and second and third with one out in their half of the tenth but could not push a run across and fell 6-5.
Teel led the way offensively for the Falcons with three hits and a run scored. Lewandoski added two hits and scored two runs.
In game two, West Alabama (11-11, 9-10) jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead in the second inning. The Tigers took advantage of a Falcons' error on a sacrifice bunt and strung four hits together after the error to score six runs.
Montevallo (10-14, 7-14) cut the Tigers' lead in half in the third inning after plating three runs in the inning. Cain singled and later came around to score on a wild pitch. Later in the inning, Smallwood and Awbrey both dropped RBI singles down the left field line to pull UM within three runs.
But that would be as close as it would get. UWA extended their lead in the sixth inning, scoring three runs off a couple Falcons errors, and pushing their lead to 9-3.
West Alabama added three runs in the ninth to give them their 12-3 win. The Tigers took advantage of three Falcons errors in the game and scored eight unearned runs.
Grayson Bray (Hartselle, Alabama) threw well for the Falcons in relief, allowing no earned runs in 3.1 innings of work. The freshman allowed just two hits while striking out two.
Daniel Buice (Winder, Georgia) and
Joel Cheatwood (Chelsea, Alabama) were again good for the Falcons out of the bullpen as well. The duo combined for 2.2 innings of scoreless relief with Buice striking out three in his 1.2 innings of work.
Awbrey and Cain had two hits apiece in the nightcap.
UP NEXT: Montevallo travels to Pensacola, Fla. next weekend for a GSC series with the University of West Florida Argos. The Falcons will play one game on Friday night at 5:00pm and a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon starting at 1:00pm.
