MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo baseball team lost at home to Delta State University 11-6 in the first of a three-game weekend series on Friday night. Montevallo is now 11-17 overall and 8-17 in Gulf South Conference play.
Neither team could get much offense going through the first two innings, but the Falcons opened the scoring with three runs in the bottom of the third inning.
After
Brandon Moore reached on an error to lead things off, Greg Lewandowski singled into right field to put runners on the corners.
Riley Cain stepped up to the plate next and singled through the left side to bring Moore home and advance Lewandowski to second base.
Khalid Collymore then laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners to second and third.
Ben Teel grounded out to second base next, but it was enough to bring Lewandowski home and make it a 2-0 game. Cain then touched home on a wild pitch to make it 3-0.
It was quiet fourth inning on both sides, but DSU exploded for seven runs in the top of the fifth to take a commanding four-run lead.
UM threatened to cut the lead in the home half of the fifth by loading up the bases, but could not bring anyone home to score.
The Statesmen tacked on four more runs in the top of the eighth to make it an 11-3 game.
The Falcons tried to mount a rally in the bottom of the ninth, and even brought three runs in thanks to a three-run homer from
Alex Langford, but ultimately fell 11-6.
