UM drops pair of matches to Delta in Saturday DH

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo baseball team lost game one of Saturday's doubleheader against Delta State University 13-9 in a Gulf South Conference matchup. Montevallo is now 11-18 overall and 8-18 in GSC play.

The Statesmen started off hot, scoring two runs in the first and three in the third to hold a 5-0 lead heading into the bottom of the third inning. Montevallo struck back in the bottom of third to make it a 5-2 game. Greg Lewandowski led things off in the inning with a solo homer to left field. The Falcons then proceeded to load up the bases, but was only able to bring one run in.

DSU tacked on one more run in the top of the fourth, but UM responded by scoring two in the bottom half to make it a 6-4 game. Evan Place scored on a balk followed by a ground out by Riley Cain that allowed Brandon Moore to touch home plate.

Neither team was able to score in the fifth, but DSU exploded for five runs in the top of the sixth to take control of the game. UM got one back in the bottom half of the inning thanks to an Asa Awbrey single that brought Moore home once again to make it 11-5.

Montevallo cut the DSU lead to just two runs in the bottom of the eighth, but could not quite even the game up. With two outs, Place hit a single into left center field that sent Alex Langford home. Moore then walked to load up the bases, and a Lewandowski double down the left field line brought all three runners home to cut the DSU lead to two.

Delta State tacked on two more in the ninth to push the lead to four where they would win 13-9.

Lewandowski led UM at the plate going 2-for-4 with four RBIs. Place went 3-for-5 with an RBI, Moore went 2-for-4 and Langford and Latimer each went 2-for-5.

The University of Montevallo baseball team dropped game three of the weekend series against Gulf South Conference foe Delta State University, 9-4 on Saturday evening. Delta State used a seven-run ninth inning to turn the tide and win the game. UM is now 11-19 overall and 8-19 in GSC contests.

It was a pitcher's duel through the first five and a half innings, with neither team gaining an inch on the other. On Senior Day, Chandler Ingram stood out and pitched six scoreless innings. Ingram finished the day with 6.2 innings pitched while giving up two runs, both unearned, six hits and striking out six.

Ben Teel opened the game's scoring in the bottom of the sixth by crushing a two-run homer to right field. DSU came right back in the top of the seventh with two runs of their own to tie the game at 2-2.

UM retook the lead in the home half of the seventh 3-2. Ryan Curran doubled down the left field line to lead things off, and was later brought home on a Reed Latimer single to right field.

Montevallo forced the Statesmen into a one-two-three inning in the top of the eighth and added another run in the bottom of the inning. Greg Lewandowski knocked a single into left field that allowed Riley Cain to come home and make it a 4-2 game.

The Falcons looked to be in control, and were just three outs away from staving off the DSU series sweep, however, the Statesman had other plans in mind.

Delta State exploded for seven runs in the top of the ninth. All seven of DSU's runs were scored with two outs.

Montevallo put runners on the corners in the bottom half of the inning, but left both runners stranded.

Brennan Ferguson led UM at the plate, going 3-for-4. Curran went 2-for-4, doubling in both of his hits.

UP NEXT: The Falcons will travel to Auburn University at Montgomery for a three-game GSC series starting Friday, April 23 at 3 p.m.
