UM wins extra inning thriller over DSU to claim series sweep

MONTEVALLO, Ala. – The University of Montevallo softball team defeated Delta State University in an exciting, extra-inning game on Saturday afternoon 8-7 to earn the series sweep. Kinley Adams' single into left field in the bottom of the eighth with two outs drove Holly LaForce Henderson home and gave UM the victory. The Falcons now hold a 14-19 overall record and are 10-14 in Gulf South Conference games.

Delta State came out hot, scoring five runs in the top of the first. UM responded by getting two back in the home half of the first. Montevallo loaded up the bases with no outs, and a pair of sacrifice flies from Sierra Easterwood and Hannah Carey cut the DSU lead to three runs.

UM tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the second to make it a 5-4 game. Adams knocked a double into left center field to drive Alexis Cortez home. Lauren Higginbotham then reached on a fielder's choice that allowed LaForce Henderson to score and cut the deficit to one.

Delta State tacked on one more in the top of the fourth, but UM was able to get it back in the bottom half to cut the deficit to one yet again. Brooke Ingram hit a sacrifice fly into right field that allowed Adams to tag up and score from third.

DSU scored another run in the top of the fifth, but UM scored two in the home half to tie the game at 7-7. After Easterwood walked, Carey rocked a two run homer to left field to even it up. From there, neither team could get much offense going until Adams' walk-off hit in the eighth.

Adams led UM at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two RBIs and scored two runs. Carey went 1-for-3 with three RBIs and scored a run.

UP NEXT: The Falcons will travel to Auburn University at Montgomery to face the Warhawks in a three-game GSC series beginning Friday, April 23 at 6 p.m.
