Montevallo softball falls to AUM, 3-1 and 5-3, in Friday’s DH

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The University of Montevallo softball team lost to Auburn University at Montgomery in both games of Friday's doubleheader on the road, 3-1 and 5-3. The Falcons are now 14-21 overall and 10-16 in Gulf South Conference play.

In game one, AUM took the lead nearly right off the bat by scoring one run in the bottom of the first. Pitching reigned supreme in the first game, as there was not another run scored until the sixth inning.

Montevallo threatened to even the game up in the top of the second. Hannah Carey got things going for the Falcons with leadoff single, but was beat by the throw at second base. Mychael McMillan got out of a jam in the bottom of the second with runners on second and third to keep the deficit at just one run.

No other hits were recorded until the sixth inning when UM got another baserunner. Brooke Ingram singled to the circle with two outs in the top of the sixth but would go no further.

The Warhawks tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the sixth thanks to a two-run homer that made it a 3-0 game.

Montevallo got one back in the top of the seventh when Carey rocked a solo homer to center field, but the Falcons' rally would end there.

Mychael McMillan got the start in the circle for the Falcons in game one, allowing three earned runs, seven hits and striking out three. Carey and Brooke Ingram led UM at the plate, each going 2-for-3.

In game two, AUM got started quickly once again. Montevallo put runners on first and second with one out, but could not get on the board in the opening frame. The Warhawks scored two runs with one out in the bottom half of the first to take a 2-0 lead. AUM then loaded the bases, but could not add any more to their lead.

UM put runners on first and second once again in the top of the second, but could not bring anyone home.

The Warhawks struck again in the bottom of the third thanks to a two-RBI double that made it a 4-0 game.

The Falcons got two runs back in the top of the fourth when Alexis Cortez crushed a two-run home run to right field that made it a 4-2 game.

Hannah Carey then hit a solo homer to right field in the top of the sixth to cut the AUM lead to just one. The Warhawks responded by hitting a solo home run of their own in the home half of the inning to push their lead right back to two runs.
